The Power of Play

Writer's picture: susayersusayer

As we grow we forget to play. At first is becomes something uncool that’s only for kids (when you’re 15, still a child but feeling so grown up!). Then as we actually become grown ups it becomes something frivolous, something that’s for other people but not for the likes of us.

What we forget is how much fun it is. How good it feels to play, to do something for no reason other that to muck about and see what happens. We forget how good it is for us.

A sketchbook page showing various colour combinations. I've mainly been playing with bright yellows, pinks, purples, blues and greens.

When you watch a child at play you marvel at how free they are. How they don’t care what they look like or whether what they are trying to do will be successful or not. They are just there, experimenting, in the moment. But that feeling doesn’t go away. We still all have the ability to play within us, it just got pushed to the bottom of the pile, lost to the passage of time. The good news is we can get it back!

Today I pulled out my sketchbook and my colouring pencils with no plan, no particular idea I wanted to work on. Just me, my favourite square sketchbook and some new crayons I’d bought. I did a couple of doodles but what I really wanted to do was play with colour. I wanted to see if I could make my own colour palette, One that felt like me. One that made my eyes happy. Not only did I manage it but I loved every minute of it. The experimenting, following my curiosity, trying things out without worrying about the outcome.

It wasn’t anything big or grand. There was no audience. It was just me sat alone at my kitchen table. But when I got up I felt energised. I felt lighter. I felt more able to tackle the rest of the day. All from making a bit of time for play.

Whatever your version of play looks like, I urge you to make a little room for it. Go in with no expectations, just an open and curious mind. You won’t be disappointed.
